700,000 visitors at the 28th Vienna New Year's Trail

A peaceful and enjoyable turn of the year at the Vienna New Year's Trail. With a peaceful and brilliant 28th New Year's Trail Vienna once again lived up to its image of being a highly liveable city. About 700,000 visitors, from home and abroad, happily and boisterously celebrated the turn of the year in the magnificent city centre of Vienna, without any incidents worth mentioning.

The great programme mix, the culinary offerings and the incomparable backdrop once again made this year's event into an unforgettable experience. And then, at midnight, when it was time for "Everybody to Waltz" and hundreds of thousands, joyfully and peacefully, danced the Danube Waltz, with fireworks above the town hall and to the chimes of the Pummerin bells, these images went round the world as an ambassador for Vienna.

Full of atmosphere into the New Year

To welcome the New Year in the proper manner, the Rathausplatz invites you to a live transmission of the Wiener Philharmoniker's New Year Concert conducted by Riccardo Muti (starting 11:00 a.m). For all those who made the night into day, there will be an opportunity of watching a recording of the concert (at appr. 2:00 p.m).

Rathausplatz (Town Hall square)

Hit Party and Giant Firework Display

The party gets started at the Vienna City Hall Square as early as 2.00 pm to the sounds of the greatest hits of the last five decades. Bands such as the Ballroom Rockers, Fräuleinwunder, Insieme, FreeMenSingers and Radio Wien DJ Johannes Willrader will be providing the event with fantastic pumping beats.

A regular highlight every year is the spectacular firework display which is held at the Universitätsring near the City Hall at midnight and the traditional Blue Danube Waltz to welcome the New Year which is then celebrated until two o’clock in the morning. (until 2.00 am).

From 10 am to 17:00 pm on the 1st of January 2018, the City Hall Square invites you to start the New Year off in a magnificent way with a live broadcast of the New Year’s concert performed by the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Riccardo Muti (from 11:15 am). After that at about 2 pm the recording of the concert will be shown again.


"okidoki" Children’s New Year’s Eve party followed by Musical Hits and Austropop

The Okidoki show from 2 pm to 6 pm promises lots of fun and entertainment for younger visitors.  Robert Steiner, Rolf Rüdiger - the cheekiest rat in Austria, and the adventure-seeking puppet character Kater Kurt will ensure that little ones have lots of fun in a lively atmosphere. 

From 7 pm, with Atemlos and Die3 there are lots of opportunities to sing along and dance to a host of hit songs and Austropop tunes (until 1.50 am).

Soul, R&B and Funk

Dancing and partying in a fantastic atmosphere to the coolest beats with The New Commitments, HPRC, Gisele Jackson & Club 54, Bad Powells and guest DJs until 2 am.


The largest ballroom in Vienna

Under the twinkling lights of sparkling chandeliers, Graben Street is transformed into a magical open-air ballroom where you can waltz gracefully into the New Year from 2 pm until 2 am. To make the experience even more enjoyable, professional dancers hold free dance lessons during the afternoon (up to 2 am).

The Austrian Mint’s New Year Coin 2018 can be purchased at the coin producer’s stand. A lucky token of lasting value, the coin, which is available in both top quality silver and at face value in copper, features a medieval image of a mischievous, smiling lion taken from the cover of the oldest book in the collection of the Austrian National Library. Treasured talismans, including the Vienna Philharmonic in silver, Lucky token and Calendar medal 2018, will also help you put a smile on the faces of your loved ones in 2018.


Waltzes and Big Bands

From 2 pm, you can join in lively New Year celebrations with the Vienna Dance Schools. The Austrian pop duo The Carpats will then enchant you with a range of current and memorable hits, as well as a number of their own rousing musical compositions. There is time for quiet reflection at 4.30 pm when you are invited to listen to a live broadcast of prayers marking the end of the year from St Stephen's Cathedral. This is followed by the “Best of Waltz and Operetta” with the Original Viennese Salon Ensemble who, alternating with the Bernd Fröhlich Orchestra, will delight you with elegant dance music (until 2 am).

Musicians from Digital DJs will create a fantastic atmosphere as they play a unique mix of the best hits of the last few decades from 2 pm to 2 am.

Neuer Markt

Party & Clubsounds

Sound specialists from Digital DJs will also get the party pumping for visitors at Neuer Markt. Whatever the weather is doing, these hot party and club beats are certain to lift the spirits and turn temperatures way up high (until 2 am).

Herbert von Karajan-Platz / Wiener Staatsoper

Herbert von Karajan-Platz / Wiener Staatsoper – Live broadcast: "Die Fledermaus"

The live broadcast from the Vienna State Opera at 7 pm of Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” is a real New Year highlight in Vienna. The performance conducted by Cornelius Meister and produced by Otto Schenk can be enjoyed free of charge via a LED video wall with seating at the square in front of the opera house. Before and after the broadcast, a medley of the most beautiful scenes from ballet and opera will be shown from 2 pm until 12.15 am.

On January 1st 2018, the Vienna State Opera will broadcast the Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert live on a large LED screen (from 11:15 am), continuing with a medley of the most beautiful scenes from ballet and opera until 7 pm, followed again by „Die Fledermaus“ until 10.30 pm.

A musical journey of discovery awaits you in the world of sound which you can enter free of charge.  You can conduct the Philharmonic Orchestra as a virtual conductor, hear your own name as a Mozart composition or climb musical scales on the Stairplay Interactive Sound Staircase. (From 2 pm to 10 pm - free admission).

Prater / Riesenradplatz

Prater / Riesenradplatz - LET'S PARTY TOGETHER with a Fantastic Firework Display to Music

Enjoy lively celebrations with a rousing programme of music and a 10-minute long firework display synchronised to music at the Vienna Prater Amusement Park. Radio Vienna DJ Simon turns the temperature up from 8 pm at the square in front of the giant Ferris wheel and then hands over the stage from 10 pm to Sam Brisbe & Steam, who will keep the party pumping with a cocktail of pop, soul and reggae (until 2 am).

On January 1st there is to see the live broadcast of the New Year's Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Riccardo Muti (11:15 hrs)

Aspern Seestadt

Aspern Seestadt - New Year Celebrations for families and Vienna’s cult bands

A colourful children's programme is run from 2 pm to 5 pm, followed from 5.30 pm by a lively New Year’s dance course.  From 8 pm Wayne & the Rolling Rockets take the stage and from 10 pm the cult band Wiener Wahnsinn rock the night away at the Aspern Seestadt (until 12.30 am).
